I like most things written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and some of the stories in this collection are good ones. The title story, "The Captain of the Polestar" I've read several times over the years, and for some reason it always bothers me. FIRST EDITION, PUBLISHER'S PRESENTATION COPY, OF CONAN DOYLE'S THE CAPTAIN OF THE POLESTAR AND OTHER TALES, FEATURING HIS FAMOUS MARIE CELESTE MYSTERY, ONE OF ONLY COPIES. CONAN DOYLE, Arthur. The Captain of the Polestar and Other Tales. London: Longmans, Green,

The Captain of the 'Polestar' [as by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle] ⓘ In early editions, the name "McAlister" was printed with a superscript c which has often been mistaken for an apostrophe; therefore, in a number of reprints and secondary sources, it appears as "M'Alister" (or, in this case, "M'Allister"). Although Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is best known as the creator of the brilliant fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, the author tried his hand at a number of different genres before perfecting the detective story. "The Captain of the Polestar" showcases a different, but equally engrossing, side of the author's undeniable talent for fiction.

For the use of some of the following Tales I am indebted to the courtesy of the Proprietors of "Cornhill," "Temple Bar," "Belgravia," "London Society," "Cassell's," and "The Boys' Own Paper.". The Captain of the Polestar () is a semi-autobiographical ghost story about the mysterious tragedy of Nicholas Craigie, the ship's captain. The story is told by a young student of medicine, as Doyle himself once was. Category: Fiction The Gully Of Bluemansdyke And Other Stories.
